Cholesterol in English
Soft, waxy substance. It is made in sufficient quantity by the body for normal body function, including the manufacture of hormones, vitamin D and bile acid. Present in all parts of the body, including the liver, heart, nervous system, muscle, intestines and skin. There are two types of cholesterol--Dietary Cholesterol and Blood Cholesterol

More: English to English translation of cholesterol
A waxy substance produced by the body and taken in with food. The body needs cholesterol for functions such as making hormones. When too much cholesterol circulates in the blood, it leads to atherosclerosis and an increased risk of heart disease. Blood cholesterol refers to the cholesterol circulating in the bloodstream; dietary cholesterol is the cholesterol consumed in food.

Cholesterol, from the Ancient Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid) followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an organic molecule. It is a sterol (or modified steroid), and an essential structural component of animal cell membranes that is required to establish proper membrane permeability and fluidity. Cholesterol is thus considered within the class of lipid molecules.

[kuh-LESS-tuh-rawl]
A waxy, fat-like substance made in the liver, and found in the blood and in all cells of the body. Cholesterol is important for good health and is needed for making cell walls, tissues, hormones, vitamin D, and bile acid. Cholesterol also comes from eating foods taken from animals such as egg yolks, meat, and whole-milk dairy products. Too much cholesterol in the blood may build up in blood vessel walls, block blood flow to tissues and organs, and increase the risk of developing heart disease and stroke.

a substance in animal tissue that is an essential component of cell membranes and nerve fiber insulation. Cholesterol is important for the metabolism and transport of fatty acids and in the production of hormones and Vitamin D. Cholesterol is manufactured by the liver, and is also present in certain foods (e.g., eggs, shellfish). There are 2 types of cholesterol in the blood, high-density (HDL) and low-density (LDL) lipoproteins. Very low cholesterol levels may indicate malnutrition.

(koh-LES-tuh-rawl)
A fat-like substance in the body. The body makes and needs some cholesterol, which also comes from foods such as butter and egg yolks. Too much cholesterol may cause gallstones. It also may cause fat to build up in the arteries. This may cause a disease that slows or stops blood flow.

More: English to English translation of cholesterol
The most common steroid in the body, cholesterol is produced in the liver and carried in the bloodstream by lipoproteins. LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) is associated with an increased risk of coronary artery (heart) disease. After age 20 years, cholesterol level testing is recommended every 5 years. Diets high in cholesterol and saturated fats can increase blood cholesterol levels. Diets high in unsaturated fats can lower blood cholesterol. The most effective means of lowering blood cholesterol is to reduce dietary saturated fat intake. Treatment of elevated cholesterol includes diet, weight loss, regular exercise, and occasionally medications.

More: English to English translation of cholesterol
A soft, waxy substance. The body makes enough cholesterol to meet its needs. Cholesterol is used in the manufacture of hormones, bile acid, and vitamin D. It is present in all parts of the body, including the nervous system, muscle, skin, liver, intestines, and heart.
Blood cholesterol Cholesterol circulating in the bloodstream. It is made in the liver and absorbed from the food you eat. The blood carries it for use by all parts of the body. A high level of blood cholesterol leads to atherosclerosis and an increased risk of heart disease. Dietary cholesterol Cholesterol in the food you eat. It is present only in foods of animal origin, not those of plant origin. Dietary cholesterol, like dietary saturated fat, raises blood cholesterol, which increases the risk for heart disease.
