Portugal (; ; , ), officially the Portuguese Republic , is a unitary semi-presidential republic. It is located in South-Western Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula, and it is the westernmost country of mainland Europe, being bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. Aside from continental Portugal, the Portuguese Republic holds sovereignty over the Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira, which are autonomous regions of Portugal. The country is named after its second largest city, Porto, whose Latin name was Portus Cale.

Position: Goalkeeper
International: 69 caps, 0 goals

The flamboyant goalkeeper looks set to soon overtake Joao Silva Pinto as Portugal’s record caps holder. His illustrious international career began back in 1990 when he made his debut in a 1-0 friendly victory against the USA. He is back with FC Porto, with whom he spent eight years prior to moving to FC Barcelona. He established himself as one of the top stoppers in the world at the Camp Nou, but he lost his place in the team after a knee injury in 1997. On his return he fell out of favour with Louis Van Gaal after criticising the Dutch manager’s squad rotation system. He helped Porto win the league title when he returned at the last season – his sixth championship with the club – and has recovered the form that made him a Barça regular.

In 56 league appearances for the giants of Portuguese soccer he scored 9 goals. He joined the Roman side from FC Porto for $10 million, and played a significant part in their UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup success while also scoriong five goals in 33 games in his first Serie A season. Speedy and strong on the right flank, he also weighs in with his fair share of goals. He is also an excellent crosser of the ball. Conceição made his international debut five months after Euro 96.

The hugely experienced central defender’s CV reads like a who’s who of top European clubs: FC Porto Parma AC, FC Barcelona and now S.S. Lazio have all appreciated the value of the cultured defender, who has also starred for Famaliçao and Clube Académica de Coimbra. Fernando Couto’s list of club honours is equally glittering: he has won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with both Barcelona and Lazio, the UEFA Cup with Parma, a UEFA Super Cup, a league title and a Spanish cup with Barça, as well as three league titles with Porto. At international level, as well as being among a select band of Portuguese players to win in excess of 60 caps, Couto won the World Youth Cup with Portugal in 1989 and appeared as part of the rock-solid Portugal defence that impressed at Euro 96. He is very strong in the air, but also an excellent reader of the game and an accomplished man-marker, and was a stalwart in the Portuguese defence for most of the 1990’s after making his debut alongside goalkeeper Vitor Baía in a friendly against the USA in 1990.
Ajax Amsterdam & Portugal

The attacking midfielder first came to prominence with Sporting Clube de Portugal. He also starred in the 1994 UEFA European Under-18 Championship, scoring once against France. Indeed, his impact at club and underage level was such that he made his senior international debut in 1995, just a month after his 19th birthday. He subsequently starred in a loan spell with West Ham United FC in England, before he was lured to the Netherlands and AFC Ajax. Extremely skilful he has yet to fulfil the promise of his teenage years. Since his debut, his international appearances have been intermittent, though he did return after an absence of 15 months for the February friendly with Belgium. He won the Dutch league title in 1998 with Ajax.

Regarded by many as the best young prospect still plying his trade in the Portuguese league, the flamboyant attacker has yet to really show his form on the international stage. He initially starred for Boavista FC, but moved to SL Benfica in 1997, and has been one of the top scorers in portuguese football since. He was a prolific scorer at underage level for the national team. He made his senior debut in 1996, aged 19, coming on a substitute in a 3-2 defeat by France. Scored the winning goal of Portugal's 3-2 Euro Cup triumph over England in June 2000.

Previous Clubs: Micaelense, Estoril, Salamanca

Pauleta is a centre forward with a notable goalscoring instinct. Always in movement looking to avoid rivañ's mark and is very difficult that he miss some shots. When he receives a ball inside the area, his only thinking is of getting the ball to the net and it's not "normal" that he gives passes. He possesses very good technique, is fast and is very good in aerial game.
Real Sociedad & Portugal

Birthdate: October 10, 1972
Birthplace: Porto, Portugal
Height: 177 cm
Weight: 74 kg
Position: Forward
International: 43 caps, 9 goals
World Cups: 0
Previous Clubs: Salgueiros, Sporting Clube de Portugal
Transfer Fee: $4.00 Millions of Dollars
Know firmly regarded as the side’s number one striker after returning after being banned in 1997 for punching the then national team coach. Since then he has moved from Sporting Clube de Portugal to Real Sociedad in Spain. Although he made his international debut in 1994 against Northern Ireland, it was only following that move to Spain that he became a regular in the national team. Technically gifted, tough and speedy is likely to plough his usual lonely furrow up front.
FC Barcelona & Portugal

Birthdate: October 31, 1979
Birthplace: Vilareal, Portugal
Height: 170 cm
Weight: 65 kg
Position: Midfielder, Forward
International: 1 caps, 1 goals
World Cups: 0
Previous Clubs: Sporting Clube de Portugal
Transfer Fee: $15.00 Millions of Dollars
The bright young hope of Portuguese football is the likely long-term replacement for Luis Figo. A product of the Sporting Clube de Lisbon youth scheme, he switched to FC Barcelona in a big-money summer move. A star of the Portuguese side that reached the final of the European U-18 Championship in 1997, he scored four goals in Portugal’s European U-21 Championship campaign, but has since graduated to the senior side. Capable of playing on either wing, his style is actually quite different to that of Luis Figo, with whom he is inevitably compared. Though he has similar close control, Simâo relies more on pace and is an explosive force, especially on the right wing.

Background
Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986.

    International Debut: October 12, 1990 vs. Luxembourg (D 1-1)

Joao Pinto is the king of Da Luz Stadium, a field which lights each Sunday with his play. With an excellent dribbling and a good change of rythm, Joao Pinto is in these moments, together with Rui Costa and Luis Figo, the most qualified player of Portugal. He plays as a midforward and he likes to begin from midfield postions to enter, dribbling or making assistances with another player in the rival aerea. The problem for Joao Pito is that he lacks shot. Portugal has a lot of players of great quality, but there is no one pure centre forward, this provokes that he plays a lot of times as second forward.

Rui Costa is a very gifted midfielder and a very good playmaker, of excellent touch of ball and with a prodigious individual technique, that allows him to dominate the ball with the two legs. He is not excessively fast, although yes very skillful and has excellent dribbles, reason why it is very difficult to snatch the ball to him. Has a great vision of game and is enabled to lead the attack of his teams. Manuel has a prodigious right leg that allows to send the free kicks with mastership and to shoot to goal with power and positioning.

The Portugal national football team is the national football team of Portugal and is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

Portugal has never won any major competition at senior level, only qualifying four times for the World Cup. Their first World Cup appearance was in 1966, where the Portuguese gave their best ever performance. In that year they reached the semifinals and lost only to the eventual world champions England. Portugal finished in third place and Eusébio was considered the best player of the tournament. The next two times Portugal qualified for the World Cup were for the 1986 World Cup and 2002 World Cup, with Portugal going out in the first round both times. The portuguese squad has also qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

In order to improve the performance, the Portuguese Football Federation decided to hire Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazilian who had led the Brazil International team to win the World Cup 2002. Later Scolari led the Portugal to the final of Euro 2004 (The European Championships), where they lost to Greece.
