Pagan in English
Pagan [from Latin paganus an inhabitant of the country, a villager; cf peasant] Heathen, the Germanic parallel in origin and meaning, was also used to distinguish an urban dweller or cultured man from a country dweller or rustic; and so both words became terms of inferiority and ultimately of reproach. Pagans and heathen, in recent European usage, are those who are not Christian, Jews, or Moslems.

Paganism is a broad group of indigenous and historical polytheistic religious traditions—primarily those of cultures known to the classical world. In a wider sense, Paganism has also been understood to include any non-Abrahamic, folk, ethnic religion. Modern ethnologists often avoid referring to non-classical and non-European, traditional and historical faiths as Pagan in favour of less ambiguous labels such as polytheism, shamanism, pantheism, and animism.

From the Latin word Paganus, meaning a "country dweller" the Church uses it as a derogatorily to describe any person who is not Christian, Jew or Moslem.Sometimes a follower of a polytheistic religion. However, this meaning is not used at present.
Pagan has at least six common and unrelated meanings. For example:
-A synonym for Wiccan
-A general-purpose snarl word to attack a person whose religion is different from the speaker's.
-An ancient polytheist.
-A follower of an Aboriginal religion
-A follower of a religion other than Judaism, Islam or Christianity -- that is one of about 45% of the world's population.

More: English to English translation of Pagan
There is no generally accepted meaning for this term. Some definitions include:
- a person who is neither Christian, a Muslim or a Jew . About 45% of the people of the world are Pagans, by this definition.
- an animistic, spirits-and-essences filled belief system, usually polytheistic. It is based upon direct perception of the forces of nature and usually involves the use of idols, talismans and taboos in order to convey respect for these forces and beings.
- Wiccans and other Neopagans sometimes use Pagan as a synonym for Neopagan.
- Conservative: no general consensus as to meaning; sometimes used as a "snarl" word to refer to cultures and religions very different from the speaker's.

We recommend that the term never be used in speech or written form. Otherwise mass confusion will occur, as the writer/speaker will use the word in one context, while readers/listeners will interpret the term according to their favorite, personal definition. We suggest that you use the actual name of the religious group that you are referring to: e.g. Hindu, Animist, Wiccan, Neopagan, etc. to avoid ambiguity

Lyotard's term.  It means to judge without criteria.  Lois Shawver interprets this to mean "judged on the basis of a felt sense of good and bad without being able to put this in words."  On Shawver's interpretation, it might be possible to discern the rules being used in a particular pagan judgment.

Be careful to distinguish this postmodern meaning of the term from both the historical one which means  'non-Christian',  as well as the contemporary meaning of western (neo)Paganism, especially Wicca.
