A fixture in the FC Bayern München and national-team defence over the past few seasons, Babbel is a classy ball-playing defender. He is set to move to Liverpool FC after Euro 2000 after spending virtually all his career with Bayern. He can play as a right-sided marker in a three-man defence, at right-back or even on the right of midfield. An excellent man-to-man marker who is also adept at bringing the ball out of defence, Babbel starred in Germany’s Euro 96 triumph. In addition, he has won the Bundesliga title, as well as the UEFA Cup.

The teenager has been hailed as the saviour of German football, and is known as ‘Das Super-Talent’. His journey from helping Germany to second place in the European U-18 Championship to his first full cap took only 19 months. He moved from 2nd Bundesliga outfit VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach to top-flight Hertha BSC Berlin last summer, and has excelled for them in the UEFA Champions League this season. His former German U-17 national coach Bernd Stöber stated that ‘he passes like Netzer and had the vision of Overath’. Deisler is likely to be a playmaker in the long term, but he is more often now employed on the right side of midfield. As well as being an excellent passer, he crosses the ball well and is also dangerous from free-kicks.

A rapid-paced left-wing-back Heinrich was a Champions League winner with Borussia Dortmund in 1997 before he moved to Serie A with AC Fiorentina. Fiercely competitive, Heinrich can be a useful source of goals, particularly when rising high in the opposition box from set-piece moves. Serie A and the Champions League will have provided Heinrich with a valuable technical education which will add a touch of cosmopolitan expertise to a German squad that is otherwise mainly drawn from a domestic pool of players.

The tough-tackling Jeremies is one of the few players from the former East Germany to have emerged since reunification. He first entered the Bundesliga spotlight in the 1997/98 season with some masterful displays with TSV 1860 München, and he soon made the short journey to FC Bayern München. He made his German debut in 1997, and was one of the few German success stories at the 1998 World Cup. The all-round midfielder scored his first international goal in the 1-0 Euro 2000 qualifying win over Finland.

Lehmann has proved an able and solid goalkeeper on the infrequent occasions when called on to deputise for Kahn. Familiar with European glory after triumphing in the UEFA Cup with FC Schalke 04 in 1997, Lehmann had a brief spell at AC Milan, but he left the Rossoneri for Borussia Dortmund when he was unable to prise the number one shirt from the grasp of veteran ‘keeper Sebastiano Rossi. Since making his international debut in 1998 Lehmann has argued several times that he is a superior keeper to Kahn, but barring an injury to the FC Bayern München man, his unshakeable confidence seems unlikely to win him anything other than a summer on the substitute’s bench.

A highly versatile performer and former member of the German Olympic football team, Nowotny has found the path to his favoured libero position blocked by the seemingly ageless Matthaus. However the Bayer 04 Leverkusen captain can also slot into a conventional midfield or defensive role. Fearsomely strong, both on the ball and in the tackle, Nowotny’s tactical awareness and ball playing ability were a significant factor in Leverkusen’s championship push in 1999-2000 and a useful addition to the German squad.

Wosz may be small in stature, but he is a tireless worker with a dash of creativity and pace who could well make an impact this summer. Born in Poland, Wosz won seven caps for East Germany and made a scoring debut for the re-unified German national side in 1997 against Israel. He has yet to score again since but his tidy ball skills and dependability make him an ideal addition to the squad after a season of consistency for Hertha BSC Berlin.

Ziege is one of the finest exponents of the left wing-back role in the game. Strong defensively, he raids effectively down the right wing, and has now reclaimed his place in the German national side. Born in Berlin, Ziege made his name at FC Bayern München where he won two German Championships and the UEFA Cup in his seven years with the club. First capped by the German national side against Brazil in 1993, Ziege missed the 1994 World Cup finals due to a serious ankle injury. In the Summer of 1997 Ziege moved to Milan AC but he suffered from injuries and a loss of form. Now rejuvenated by his move last summer to Middlesbrough FC, Ziege’s second coming in the national team has been sensational. He scored a hat-trick against Northern Ireland in only his second game back.

Background
As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

The man with the most effective heading on earth! Beginner in the era of coach of the national team Berti Vogts created like hardly another debuetant immediately the link to master eleven. Top-Scorer in Serie B with Ascoli. Move to Udinese and became a tremendous goal scorer, made of Udinese a respected team in Italian Serie A. Kahn spent a lot of time on the bench of the German National Team, but after Kopke retired from National team, Oliver established as the no. 1 GK. He is, for sure, the most secure and strong goal-keeper of the Bundesliga. Kahn, as Sepp Maier, has the same staring, and the same bad humour which is typical of winners. 1998-99 season was very good for him, was voted best goalkeeper in UEFA competitions, won German national championship, UEFA Champions League runner-up and established a new record of minutes without conceding a goal.

He has already won a Bundesliga title, a bronze medal at the Olympic games (Barcelona 1992, when he was fifteen !), two second place at the World Cups under 20 of Australia and Under 17 of Japan both in 1993. He's playing regularly in the defence for Bayern München, not missing a game of Bundesliga championship or UEFA Champions League. Wonderful touch for a defender, he's very good in the air, and never stops : concentrated for 90 minutes, he can play man to man or in defensive line of four. One of best african players, he's one the best in the world.

Magic, ingenious german midfielder, ball handling, ability of getting through, always an eye for the fellow player: Those are the strengths of Bayern and national team player Mehmet Scholl. Very good fellow of Bayern GK Oliver Kahn. He got injured before France 1998 World Cup, and he needed rest to fully recover, in his aim of going to France, he decided not to rest, even though he was playing very good, Berti Vogts decided to drop him from German World Cup squad. The next shocking aspect for Mehmet was a spinal cartilage. In September '98 he had to go to hospital because of his ankle. Scholl: "During the operation the doctor noticed that a tendon was almost completely damaged". But he is now at his 100% and has superb skills in both German National Team and Bayern München.
