fungus
\fun"gus\ (?), n.; pl. l. fungi (#), e. funguses (#). [l., a mushroom; perh. akin to a doubtful gr. &?; sponge, for &?;;if so, cf. e. sponge.]
1. (bot.) any one of the fungi, a large and very complex group of thallophytes of low organization, -- the molds, mildews, rusts, smuts, mushrooms, toadstools, puff balls, and the allies of each.
note: the fungi are all destitute of chorophyll, and, therefore, to be supplied with elaborated nourishment, must live as saprophytes or parasites. they range in size from single microscopic cells to systems of entangled threads many feet in extent, which develop reproductive bodies as large as a man's head. the vegetative system consists of septate or rarely unseptate filaments called hyph?; the aggregation of hyph? into structures of more or less definite form is known as the mycelium. see fungi, in the supplement.
2. (med.) a spongy, morbid growth or granulation in animal bodies, as the proud flesh of wounds. oblyn.

More: English to English translation of Fungus
A fungus (; plural: fungi or funguses) is any member of a large group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds (British English: moulds), as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom, Fungi, which is separate from plants, animals, protists, and bacteria. One major difference is that fungal cells have cell walls that contain chitin, unlike the cell walls of plants and some protists, which contain cellulose, and unlike the cell walls of bacteria. These and other differences show that the fungi form a single group of related organisms, named the Eumycota (true fungi or Eumycetes), that share a common ancestor (is a monophyletic group). This fungal group is distinct from the structurally similar myxomycetes (slime molds) and oomycetes (water molds). The discipline of biology devoted to the study of fungi is known as mycology (from the Greek μύκης, mukēs, meaning "fungus"). Mycology has often been regarded as a branch of botany, even though it is a separate kingdom in biological taxonomy. Genetic studies have shown that fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants.

1. One of a group of primitive, nonvascular organisms including mushrooms, yeasts, rusts, and molds. 2. Fungi, which were once classified as plants, have since been reclassified as unmoving organisms that lack chlorophyll. Some fungi are single-celled but differ from bacteria in that they have a distinct nucleus and other cellular structures. Reproduction is accomplished by spores. Mycologists (scientists working with fungi) estimate that there are 100,000 species of fungi, ranging from baker's yeast to dermatophytes (fungi that cause ringworm and athlete's foot) to potentially invasive species such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus. As many as 150 of these organisms have now been linked to animal or human diseases.

A Kingdom made up of a diverse group of unicellular or multicellular, eukaryotic organisms which are not plants or animals. Many are parasitic or saprophytic. Both asexual and sexual reproduction are possible. The Kingdom includes five phyla: Zygomycetes (conjugating fungi, black bread molds), Deuteromycetes (reproduce only asexually, Aspergillus 'brown mold' and Penicillium), Basidiomycetes (incl. mushrooms), Ascomycetes (incl. Neurospora 'bread mold' and Saccharomyces 'baker's yeast') and Mycophycophyta (incl. lichens). Some of them (Basidiomycetes) have one of the most ancient pheromone-based mating-type recognition systems. See Fungiin Kimball's Biology
Pages. See also dikaryosis, heterokaryon and mating types.
