n : ethiopia is a republic in northeastern africa on the red sea; formerly called abyssinia [syn: ethiopia, federal democratic republic of ethiopia , yaltopya, abyssinia]

ethiopia
country of burnt faces; the greek word by which the hebrew cush is rendered (gen. 2:13; 2 kings 19:9; esther 1:1; job 28:19; ps. 68:31; 87:4), a country which lay to the south of egypt, beginning at syene on the first cataract (ezek. 29:10; 30:6), and extending to beyond the confluence of the white and blue nile. it corresponds generally with what is now known as the soudan (i.e., the land of the blacks). this country was known to the hebrews, and is described in isa. 18:1; zeph. 3:10. they carried on some commercial intercourse with it (isa. 45:14). its inhabitants were descendants of ham (gen. 10:6; jer. 13:23; isa. 18:2, "scattered and peeled," a.v.; but in r.v., "tall and smooth"). herodotus, the greek historian, describes them as "the tallest and handsomest of men." they are frequently represented on egyptian monuments, and they are all of the type of the true negro. as might be expected, the history of this country is interwoven with that of egypt. ethiopia is spoken of in prophecy (ps. 68:31; 87:4; isa. 45:14; ezek. 30:4-9; dan. 11:43; nah. 3:8-10; hab. 3:7; zeph. 2:12).

(burnt faces). The country which the Greeks and Romans described as "AEthiopia" and the Hebrews as "Cush" lay to the south of Egypt, and embraced, in its most extended sense, the modern Nubia, Sennaar, Kordofan and northern Abyssinia, and in its more definite sense the kingdom of Meroe. (Ezekiel 29:10) The Hebrews do not appear to have had much practical acquaintance with Ethiopia itself, though the Ethiopians were well known to them through their intercourse with Egypt. The inhabitants of Ethiopia were a Hamitic race. (Genesis 10:6) They were divided into various tribes, of which the Sabeans were the most powerful. The history of Ethiopia is closely interwoven with that of Egypt. The two countries were not unfrequently united under the rule of the same sovereign. Shortly before our Saviour's birth a native dynasty of females, holding the official title of Candace (Plin. vi. 35), held sway in Ethiopia, and even resisted the advance of the Roman arms. One of these is the queen noticed in (Acts 8:27)

Background
Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, with the exception of the 1936-41 Italian occupation during World War II. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled in 1991 by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A two and a half year border war with Eritrea ended with a peace treaty on 12 December 2000. Final demarcation of the boundary is currently on hold due to Ethiopian objections to an international commission's finding requiring it to surrender sensitive territory.
