an animal frequently mentioned in Scripture. It was used by the hebrews as a watch for their houses, (Isaiah 56:10) and for guarding their flocks. (Job 30:1) Then also, as now troops of hungry and semi-wild dogs used to wander about the fields and the streets of the cities, devouring dead bodies and other offal, (1 Kings 14:11; 21:19,23; 22:38; Psalms 59:6) and thus became so savage and fierce and such objects of dislike that fierce and cruel enemies are poetically styled dogs in (Psalms 22:16,20) moreover the dog being an unclean animal, (Isaiah 66:3) the epithets dog, dead dog, dog's head, were used as terms of reproach or of humility in speaking of one's self. (1 Samuel 24:14; 2 Samuel 3:8; 9:8; 16:9; 2 Kings 8:13)

The domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a subspecies of the gray wolf (Canis lupus), a member of the Canidae family of the mammalian order Carnivora. The term "domestic dog" is generally used for both domesticated and feral varieties. The dog was the first domesticated animal and has been the most widely kept working, hunting, and pet animal in human history. The word "dog" can also refer to the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" which refers to the female of the species.

In imaging science, difference of Gaussians is a feature enhancement algorithm that involves the subtraction of one blurred version of an original image from another, less blurred version of the original. In the simple case of grayscale images, the blurred images are obtained by convolving the original grayscale images with Gaussian kernels having differing standard deviations. Blurring an image using a Gaussian kernel suppresses only high-frequency spatial information. Subtracting one image from the other preserves spatial information that lies between the range of frequencies that are preserved in the two blurred images. Thus, the difference of Gaussians is a band-pass filter that discards all but a handful of spatial frequencies that are present in the original grayscale image.

Origin
From Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Meaning
Telephone.
Origin
Cockney rhyming slang. In my youth, which was spent in England, but not within the sound of Bow Bells, my friends and I used the phrase 'telling bone' for telephone. I've not heard that anywhere since. Meaning
Very hot days.
Origin
The ancient Romans noticed that the hottest days of the year, i.e. in late July and early August, co-incided with the Dog Star (aka Sirius, aka The Great Dog) being in the same part of the sky as the Sun. They thought the star contributed to the heat of the day. Meaning
Spiteful and mean spirited.
Origin
Like the proverbial dog who slept in a manger not because he wanted to eat the hay there but to prevent the other animals from doing so. Meaning
Excellent - the absolute apex.
Origin
No doubt coined from dogs' habit of licking the aforementioned organs in preference to almost any other activity. Meaning
A mess or muddle.
Origin
Derived from the unpleasant habit of dogs, rising early before the local townsfolk, or eating the mess of food dropped or vomited onto the pavement the previous night. Meaning
It you pay someone to do a task for you it is unecessary for you to do it yourself.
Origin
Earliest citation: B. MELBANCKE - Philotimus, 1583. "It is smal reason you should kepe a dog, and barke your selfe." Origin
From Shakespeare's Macbeth. Meaning
Raining very heavily.
Origin
The phrase is supposed to have originated in england in the 17th century. City streets were then filthy and heavy rain would occasionally carry along dead animals. Richard Brome's The City Witt, 1652 has the line 'It shall rain dogs and polecats'. Also, cats and dogs both have ancient associations with bad weather. Witches were supposed to ride the wind during storms in the form of cats. Meaning
An item of group of minor importance influencing events more than its larger and more important neighbour. S.J. Perelman, the US humorist, used the phrase for a nice wittism after escaping the attentions of a group of prostitutes - 'A case of the tail dogging the wag'.

Dog, (n.)

A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world's worship. This Divine Being in some of his smaller and silkier incarnations takes, in the affection of Woman, the place to which there is no human male aspirant. The Dog is a survival -- an anachronism. He toils not, neither does he spin, yet Solomon in all his glory never lay upon a door-mat all day long, sun-soaked and fly-fed and fat, while his master worked for the means wherewith to purchase the idle wag of the Solomonic tail, seasoned with a look of tolerant recognition.

frequently mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments. Dogs were used by the Hebrews as a watch for their houses (Isa. 56:10), and for guarding their flocks (Job 30:1). There were also then as now troops of semi-wild dogs that wandered about devouring dead bodies and the offal of the streets (1 Kings 14:11; 16:4; 21:19, 23; 22:38; Ps. 59:6, 14). As the dog was an unclean animal, the terms "dog," "dog's head," "dead dog," were used as terms of reproach or of humiliation (1 Sam. 24:14; 2 Sam. 3:8; 9:8; 16:9). Paul calls false apostles "dogs" (Phil. 3:2). Those who are shut out of the kingdom of heaven are also so designated (Rev. 22:15). Persecutors are called "dogs" (Ps. 22:16). Hazael's words, "Thy servant which is but a dog" (2 Kings 8:13), are spoken in mock humility=impossible that one so contemptible as he should attain to such power.

Например: You should be patient and wait until you get a chance. Remember every dog has his day. - Ты должен быть терпеливым и ждать, пока не представится шанс. Помни, что будет и на твоей улице праздник.
созвездие Большого Пса
Только упрямому это под силу (досл.: Не размер человека важен в битве, а размер битвы в человеке)

Dog does not eat dog; and it is hard to be robbed by an Englishman, after being robbed a dozen times by the French. (Ch. Kingsley, ‘Hereward the Wake’, ch. XXX)

Hot dog!
