    Longhaired Chihuahua
    Photo: Tetsu Yamazaki

    Height: 6-9 inches.
    Weight: 2-6 lbs.
    Life Span: 12-15 yrs.
    Breed Group: Companion Dogs
    Overview
The Chihuahua is the smallest of all dog breeds. Because of their tiny size and sensitive nature, Chihuahuas are usually not a good choice for households with small children.
They are, on the other hand, ideal companions for apartment dwellers and elderly people. As long as Chihuahuas are obedience-trained and socialized early with adults, children, and other animals, they make playful, confident companions.
    Appearance
The Chihuahua's coat may be smooth with soft, close-lying hair or long and soft with fringe on the ears and feathering on the tail.
All coat colors are seen. The most common are red, fawn, and black and tan. The "apple-domed" head and large ears are this breed's most recognizable features.
    Grooming & Exercise Needs
The Chihuahua requires only occasional brushing and is satisfied with short walks.
    Origins
The Chihuahua may have developed in the 9th century from the Techichi, a toy breed of the Toltec Indians of Central America. Or it may have been brought to Central America by the Chinese or Spanish.
    Special Alerts
Breed-related health concerns: patellar luxation, heart problems.
